The fundamental problem with the lecture series is the topic: to understand four disparate sages from vastly different eras, geographies, teachings and lives. The common thread is their influence on the humanity, of course. As good as the individual sessions on each one of them are, the compares and contrasts are wholly inadequate.The facts of the four greats are interesting. Almost everyone is likely to walk out with new knowledge about their lives. Their teachings are handled with extreme political correctness/historic accuracy: as a result, the sections on the own messages are quite detailed for Confucius, illuminating for Buddha, scant for Jesus and justifying for Muhammad.The author misses a trick or two in avoiding their later influences: what made their messages truly universal and the processes that led to them as well as distortions. This would have substantially expanded the scope but possibly drew out more parallels. The biggest fault is in not spending sufficient time on the comparisons of their messages. It is only in the last two sections where the author tries to properly contrast the four's messages. However with the domineering need not to rank their ideas on any factors (veracity, speculativeness, internal consistency, later validity, acceptance, appropriateness on today's ethical/moral scales, practicability, relevance etc), the sections feel extremely hollow.Overall, the lecture series is good if one wants to learn about the proven life facts of their sages and accepted overviews of their main ideas.
